Rugby ATL learn vital lessons in loss to Old Glory DC
Atlanta, Ga (Jan 27th, 2020). Rugby ATL are back in Atlanta after a quick bus trip up to Virginia to play Old Glory DC.
While the score line of 17 – 35 was not what was wanted, there were a lot of positives to take out of the match at the St James Indoor arena in front of over 1,300 fans.
Rugby ATL dominated in most aspects of play including possession (59%), penalties (9 against Rugby ATL, 20 against Old Glory) and territory (58%) throughout the night, which bodes well for the season ahead. Unfortunately a strong Old Glory defense (made 90% of their tackles) limited Rugby ATL to only 2 tries.
Rugby ATL Coach Scott Lawrence chose to work with a typical match day roster of 23 compared to Old Glory’s roster of 28. This difference in bench depth and an opportunistic and effective counter attack from Old Glory, led to a strong finish from the hosts in the last 15 minutes and an eventual try tally of 4 for the men in blue.
“We really enjoyed the environment and Old Glory were tough competitors. We were able to test our depth and take plenty of learnings away from the trip. I‘m proud of our men’s effort and they showed that they can effectively run a game plan. A fundamental first step to competing in a long campaign for a young team” said Coach Scott Lawrence on his return.
