Rugby ATL “Superhero” Team to take on Toronto Arrows at 3 pm on Sunday, March 1st
Atlanta, Ga (February 22, 2020). General Manager and Head Coach, Scott Lawrence, has announced his roster to take on Eastern Conference leaders, the Toronto Arrows, in Marietta on Sunday afternoon.
#1 Jamie Ferrante gets the start alongside prior week front-row starters, #2 Alex Maughan and #3 Conor Gleeson.
#4 Johan Momsen will start alongside #5 Stefan Willemse in the second-row after a try-scoring performance in the 19 – 22 loss to RUNY last week. The back-row changes again with welcome returns for #7 Matt Heaton (a Canadian International colleague to many of the Toronto Arrows team), and #6 Marno Redelinghuys, back from a two-match break due to injury. Stalwart #8 Ross Deacon will anchor the back of the scrum.
The half-backs remain unchanged and in the mid-field, the experienced #13 Jeremy Misailegalu returns to partner #12, Ryan Nell. In the back three, #11 Harley Wheeler will start with fellow Harley, #14 Harley Davidson, while #15 Zander Van Schalkwyk, fresh from a 2-try performance last week, moves from wing to full back.
#16 Neethling Gericke makes the 23 man roster for the first time this year in a bench that includes internationals #17 Chance Wenglewski (U.S.A) and #19 Conor Keys (Canada) as well as MLR First XV representative, #23 Sean Coughlan.
“There’s no question that at this point in the season Toronto and San Diego are the two top teams in the MLR. Toronto are cohesive and work hard for each other. It will be a tough contest where we’ll have to do the simple things better than we did last week,” said Coach Lawrence earlier this week.
The unbeaten Toronto Arrows lead the MLR Eastern Conference team and are coming off a strong 39 – 17 win over last year’s winner, the Seattle Seawolves. The squad is packed with international representation including 9 Canadian, 3 Uruguayan and 1 Argentinian. Rugby ATL will need to get their discipline right on the day. Fullback and MLR All First XV representative Sam Malcolm had a perfect 9 from 9 kicking day and racked up 24 points against Seattle.
The Toronto Arrows arrive in Atlanta with some respect for Rugby ATL with Director of Rugby, Chris Silverthorn acknowledging the fast start. “Atlanta has been a strong addition to the league this year, and have the record to the prove it,” advised Silverthorn. “They’re very stringy defensively, which puts the onus on us to demonstrate a solid work rate and make the most of our opportunities. We’re going to have to be alert and hungry if we’re going to come away with a win.”
The match will be covered on NBC Affiliate, WATL (NATL), ESPN +, and live-streamed on Major League Rugby’s Facebook page (from 2.55 pm).
